Nutrition in Slovenian Kindergartens and Schools – The Foundation of Prevention
Slovenia can boast one of the best-organized nutrition systems in kindergartens and schools in the world. All children, regardless of their socio-economic status, are guaranteed nutrition that meets their nutritional and energy needs. This is an achievement we can be genuinely proud of as a society.
Our organized school nutrition system has been recognized internationally as an example of good practice on multiple occasions and will also be presented at the upcoming International Conference on Pediatrics & Pediatric Nutrition in Dubai, where Dr. Maja Berlic will present the results of her doctoral research in the lecture "Preschool Nutrition As a Tool For Preventing Chronic Disease: Evidence From Slovenia."
The research results show that with appropriately planned nutrition in kindergartens, we can help children consume larger quantities of vegetables, whole grain foods, and nuts, which have proven positive effects on health. It was also found that higher intake of foods rich in antioxidants contributes to reducing markers of oxidative stress in children — substances that are present in elevated concentrations in numerous chronic non-communicable diseases.

May the results be an inspiration and encouragement to all of you who strive daily to offer children in kindergartens and schools the best for their health.
